Outback Experience

During the Australian winter months (from June to September), Southern Right Whales gather at the Head of Bight on the Nullarbor to give birth.

The first whales for the 2010 season have been seen in the Head of Bight Marine Park.  As of this week (starting Monday, June 28) there are 25 whales, with 5 calves.

From the Nullarbor Roadhouse, Chinta Air offers a 30 minute scenic flight over the Head of Bight Marine Park to view the whales and to fly along the Bunda Cliffs.

Chinta Air are the only company based at Nullarbor offering scenic flights over the area.   Scenic flights are only available during the months when the whales are at the Head of Bight Marine Park - usually June until September.

Visitors to the region can stand on viewing platforms at the top of the Bunda Cliffs to see the whales as they breach, relax, and nurse their young. Whale numbers vary from year to year but average between 80 and 100 whales during the peak months of July and August.
