Coober Pedy
with whales - Adelaide, Coober Pedy, Nullarbor, Head of Bight, Nullarbor,
Ceduna, Adelaide
2 days/1 night. Tour code: CTOHOB
Includes one nights accommodation,
meals as noted.
Day 1:
Depart Adelaide for Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy
is a town of 4000 people known for its opal mining, and the fact
that most of its residents live underground. There is plenty to
keep a visitor engrossed for at least a day, viewing the grassless
golf course, the underground church and houses, looking for gems,
shopping for opals. And all this is set against a backdrop of one
of the harshest environments in Australia.
Day 2 (B, L):
Each year, from June until September, up to
100 Southern Right Whales gather at the Head of Bight to calve and
to breed. Travellers can watch from platforms built along the cliffs
at Head of Bight as the whales slap tails or leap out of the water.
After breakfast, depart Coober Pedy and enjoy
scenic views of the rugged Outback landscape on the way to Nullarbor,
on the edge of the vast expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. Land at
the Nullarbor Hotel/Motel. Travel by vehicle down to whale-watching
platforms to get a closer look at the Whales and the Bunda Cliffs,
which drop 340 feet straight down to the Southern Ocean. Return
to the Nullarbor Hotel/Motel, and fly along the coast to
Ceduna.
Scenery will include:
•
Wheat and sheep farms
• Salt ponds and a gypsum mine
at Kevin
• The Far West Coast community of Penong
• Coastal scenery, including Fowlers Bay.
• The Illcumba sand dunes.
• From Ceduna, fly direct with Regional Express to Adelaide
in the late evening.
